Grilling season is my favorite! I like to stretch it out as long as possible. I probably start before anyone else and end well after everyone else. I just have a hard time letting go. What’s better than a juicy grilled hamburger? Well, top it with buttery sautéed mushrooms, sweet caramelized onions and gooey melty Swiss cheese and I’d say you can’t get much better. If you are a fan of mushrooms, this combo will speak to you. If you aren’t a fan, well, then… I’m sorry. You are totally missing out! No matter what I do I just simply cannot get my husband to fall in love with mushrooms. As much as I want him to. I suppose that just means more for me right?
There’s nothing original about this hamburger. It’s your typical ‘shroom & Swiss. But is it? Have you ever caramelized onions? It’s different than just sautéing them. Caramelizing them takes time and patience for the sweetness buried inside to transform the onion into a beautiful golden mixture of pure wonderfulness. Sauteed Mushroom & Swiss Burger with Caramelized Onions
Nothing goes better with sautéed mushrooms than melty gooey Swiss cheese and a pile of sweet caramelized onions. Put all of that on top of a perfectly grilled burger and you've got yourself a Sauteed Mushroom & Swiss Burger with Caramelized Onions!
- 1 lb. ground hamburger
- Garlic salt to taste
- Onion powder to taste
- Seasoned salt to taste
- 2 c. sliced mushrooms
- 1 tbsp. butter
- 1/2 onion caramelized
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
Heat grill to medium-high.
Divide hamburger in to eight equal balls. Flatten and season both sides.
Grill to desired doneness. Remove from heat.
Caramelize onions (see link below for recipe). Saute mushrooms with butter until tender; set aside.
Once burger is done, top with onions, mushrooms, cheese, & lettuce.

We prefer to buy romaine lettuce! Isn’t it so pretty?? We never buy iceberg just because it has zero nutrients – but I guess it depends on your personal preference :)
I almost always order a swiss mushroom burger when we go out. Something about that combo just makes me super happy. I can’t wait to try this recipe!

I’m not a mushroom fan either ^ but I do know that this is a popular burger because we made it a lot at a golf course snack shop I worked in. Looks great!
