Ingredients

  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tsp. milk
  • 2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Buttercream Vanilla Frosting

  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 c. powdered sugar sift if lumpy
  • 1/4 c. milk or less

Instructions

Sugar Cookies

  1. Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla.

  2. Add egg; beat till light and fluffy. Stir in milk.

  3. Sift together dry ingredients; blend into creamed mixture.

  4. Divide dough in half. Chill 1 hour. 

  5. On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch thickness.* Cut desired shapes with cutters.

  6. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 F about 6-8 minutes. Cool slightly, remove from pan. Makes 2 dozen. *Chill other half till ready to use.

Frosting

  1. Combine butter or margarine, salt, vanilla, and 1 c. of sugar. Add milk and remaining sugar. Add more sugar to thicken or milk to thin, if needed for spreading consistency.
