I love a good sandwich. But what makes a sandwich? The bread! The hubs and I are pretty particular about our bread. We’ve got to be able to recognize and pronounce the ingredients. About a year or so ago we stumbled upon Dave’s Killer Bread in our Costco.
I know what you’re thinking.. why would two people need so much bread? Well, we keep a loaf in the fridge and freeze the other one! Works perfect and we end up going through both loaves before our next Coscto trip (where we stock up again).
When I was asked if I’d be interested in trying the two newest DKB products in the amazing line of bread, I couldn’t jump fast enough at the opportunity. Not only are they delicious, but they are organic AND Non-GMO Project verified!!! I couldn’t wait to tear into the loaves as soon as I got them and this sandwich was the perfect way to get the party started.
Here are some killer facts:
- No Fillers: All of Dave’s Killer Bread products contain no artificial preservatives, no artificial ingredients and no high fructose corn syrup
- 100% Whole Wheat:
The first Non-GMO Project verified, certified organic, 100% whole wheat bread that packs a serious nutrition punch: 4 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, nothing artificial

This looks so good! I would mix the sunflower seeds into the spread so they don’t fall out.
My family loved this sandwich. Thank you for the recipe. My mom told me to make sure I keep the recipe.

Ms. Feld,
I am not a vegetarian, but this sandwich recipe sounds absolutely delicious! I just happen to run across this while perusing Pinterest today. Do you not send out e-mails regularly from your website as some do? And< I am looking for more websites of Black women. Thanks much.

I made this amazing sandwich on David’s Good Seed Killer Bread. The texture, the flavor ,the fresh ingredients . Very satisfying for a meatless sandwich. Served with a nice bowl of tomato soup, for a meatless meal. Delicious and a definite keeper. Followed recipe exactly, perfection!
Linda
This was delicious! I did have to change a couple things because I used what I had, kale instead of Spinach and I didn’t have any pepperjack so I sliced up a fresh jalapeño. Thanks for posting
Tabitha
Thank you so much for this recipe! It’s one of my favorites! Unfortunately, I have a very hard time finding sprouts of any kind around here. I use thinly sliced snap peas instead until I can find some. It’s delicious!
Chef Bill
Very good sandwich… Couldn’t get the honey when so used a different Dave’s whole wheat. Also substituted the alfalfa sprouts for micro greens.
Catherine
This sandwich sounds amazing, but would be even better on Dave’s Good Seed, my family’s favorite variety. If your Costco carries it, it’s definitely worth a try.

Hi Yvonne,
I just printed your Ultimate Vegi Sandwich recipe and will most likely have it for lunch tomorrow. I’m just an old man who decided to eat like I did when I was a young hippie, even started sprouting again. Thanks for the recipe!!
Dominic
Yvonne
Hi Dominic, let me know what you think of the recipe once you’ve had a chance to try it! That’s great to hear that you are returning to your sprouting ways. :) I’m such a big fan of sprouts.
Christie
Vegetarians eat no meat. You’re describing vegan. Maybe you should do your own research before calling all Americans idiots.
Daniel
Vegano no es lo mismo que vegetariano, Lee primero antes del tema antes de opinar.
Kelly
This is the TRANSLATION to Maria Wendy’s post;
Hahaha. You Americans are so peculiar. How can you say vegetarian? Vegetarian means exclusively vegetables, nothing from the animal kingdom and this sandwich has cheese (which comes out of the cows) to stop a train. Well, I guess your scarce culture is part of your language. I take it because it is very well done and I love it. Greetings and a good weekend
Dunia
So I followed the recipe and made these for super bowl for our carnivore friends and they all loved them! Thank you for a healthy and yummy sub for the usual meat favorites served. This is my go to for a delish lunch or dinner sandwich meal as I’m a vegetarian. Thanks again ;)
Yvonne
Hi Dunia, that’s so awesome to hear that these veggie sandwiches were a hit for the Super Bowl! It makes me happy to hear how this recipe is a go to for you, thanks for sharing!
Christina
I live in a small community and searched all our grocery stores and no fresh sprouts, is there an alternative or can you use canned?
Yvonne
Hi Christina, that’s a great question. The sprouts are an important part of this recipe since they add such a light & refreshing crunch to the sandwich, but you could always add some extra cucumber to try and make up for the lack of sprouts. Another option would be to try growing your own sprouts at home! It’s surprisingly easy to do! If you search Amazon for sprouting trays (I prefer the round trays that are 6″ in diameter) and alfalfa sprouting seeds (the most common type of sprout) you should get some good results. Hope that helps!

What about grated Jicama?
Tamara
Hello the recipe looks delicious but I also have issues finding Alfalfa sprouts, you have inspired me to try to grow them like you mentioned above, so thank you!
Patricia
This sounds so mouth watering. My boys loved veggie sandwich’s as they grow up. Once they left home to start there families I forgot about these but oh my goodness your spread sounds delicious. I only put mayonnaise. My boys visit since they moved into the same city as I. Iam definitely going to use your recipe, thank you. Sincerely Patricia

Fantastic sandwich! Couldn’t find DKB so we ate it on croissants. Added some hummus as an extra layer. So good!
Yvonne
Thanks so much for letting me know that you enjoyed this wonderful sandwich flgirl! I love croissants, and I also happen to love hummus as well, so I’m sure your sandwiches were absolutely delicious!
Marie
My 10 year old decided she wanted to try eating vegetarian so I was on the hunt for a sandwich that still gave her protein. She LOVED it so much! She said she wants to eat it every day. :) Our only change is regular Jack cheese because she’s not crazy about spicy foods. Thank you so much for this recipe!!
Yvonne
Hi Marie, I’m so glad to hear that your daughter found a vegetarian sandwich that delivers on protein and tastes great! This is definitely a sandwich that I could eat (almost) everyday. ;) Thanks for stopping by!
Sara
Shhh… don’t tell anyone about DKB! It is soo amazing but is almost always out of stock at our local grocery store. I always buy two at a time and keep one in the freezer. This sandwich looks delicious, will definitely try it! I’m planning to sun the chive spread for Kite Hill (vegan) everything cream cheese spread.
Yvonne
Hi Sara! Hahaha, I hear ya! Our local Costco carries a two pack of several varieties of Dave’s Killer Bread, and they always have an abundant supply so we’re very fortunate that way! I hope you enjoy the sandwich!
Renee
Just found this! Looks yummy. Thinking of adding Marjon spicy sprouts and very thinly sliced radishes. Oh and roasted red peppers maybe in the cream cheese spread. Thanks for the recipe 😀
Yvonne
Hi Renee, thanks for visiting! Spicy sprouts, sliced radishes, and roasted red peppers all sound like they’d be wonderful additions! Veggie power!
Thanks for sharing! Do you use this spread in any other recipes or dishes?
Yvonne
Hi Vanessa, you’re so welcome and thanks for stopping by! I haven’t used this spread in any other recipes or dishes yet, but I can see if being very versatile and working well for almost any sandwich, especially one with veggies on it.
This looks so good! Does the chive and onion spread keep long?
Yvonne
Hi Suzanne! Great question. I find that the chive and onion spread keeps well for about a week in the fridge! It should also store great in the freezer for up to 3 months, and should thaw out in about 24 hours once you transfer it from the freezer to the fridge.
Deborah Swanson
Hi, this is just what I was looking for Movies in the park with family. A couple of them don’t like avocado but love guacamole. Do you think guacamole could be substituted for the mashed avocado. Thanks much for the recipe and the guidance.
Yvonne
Hi Deborah! This sandwich really would be so perfect for movies in the park! I love watching movies in the park by the way! Guacamole would absolutely be a great substitute for the mashed avocado!

carolyn, did you try looking for sprouts in the produce section of your local grocery store. Earth Fare has a whole selection in the produce department by the salads.
Kathleen Lytle
Love Dave’s Killer Bread – I buy the regular size bread loaves – thin sliced it is really good. Have not seen the Honey Wheat one in our area. I work at Earth Fare healthy Grocery Store in North Canton, Ohio we sell it there. It is so fresh all the time.
I am unable to find alfalfa sprouts, actually, any sprouts, anywhere. Otherwise looks delicious

Yvonne
Oh wonderful – I hope you enjoyed it!
Laura
This sandwich looks amazing! I will definitely give this a go!
Laura
I did end up making this this past weekend – oh wow! The best sandwich ever! I had to do two things slightly differently but the gist is there: I left off the sunflower seeds. As far as the Chive and Onion spread, I cheated and bought the ready-made stuff that is a whipped chive cream cheese spread. I did not have Dave’s bread at the time but I still enjoyed the sandwich. I have since found a place that carries the bread and I will be stopping there tomorrow to pick up a loaf or two.
Yvonne
YAYAYA! This is wonderful!!! I’m so happy you made and likes it – your substitutions sound just fine. I’m all about easy peasy – so wahoo!
