A perfect addition to the meal! | Tried and TastyEveryone’s got their idea of the perfect gravy. My idea is a gravy with bits and pieces in it. I grew up on a ‘chunky’ gravy and that’s what I love. I also LOVE mushrooms like crazy, as well as cooked onion! So when putting together my gravy I knew it had to have those two key factors. When OXO asked me to participate in the #OXOTurkeyDay event I was beyond thrilled. Last year I went all out for the meal, and by the end I settled on a quick gravy that was good, but not great. This year I was looking to redeem myself. I’m glad to say I’ve done just that. 

In order to get a good gravy, you need turkey drippings. Thaw your turkey in the recommended time (either in cold water or in the fridge), prep it with your twine – I found a really great video tutorial on How To Truss A Turkey here that you may find helpful, roast it up and you’re ready to go! I gathered my essential tools including my OXO Perfect Cut Twine Dispenser, OXO Angled Baster with Cleaning Brush, OXO Poultry Lifter, OXO 2 Cup Fat Separator and just because.. my OXO Stainless Steel Butter Dish. Funny story.. a couple of years ago, I didn’t realize you needed a fat separator when I was making gravy. Let me just tell you this, it was an utter disaster. I’ve been using my fat separator ever since!

This Mushroom & Onion Turkey Gravy would be delicious on your holiday turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Comes together quickly with little hassle. A perfect addition to the meal!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 c. finely chopped mushrooms
  • 1 c. finely chopped onion 1 med onion generally
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 c. turkey drippings strained (see below)

Instructions

  1. Using an OXO Good Grips Fat Separator, pour your turkey drippings into the separator and allow the fat rise to the top while lean gravy settles to the bottom. Once the gravy has settled, remove the strainer and the stopper and pour out perfect gravy.   

  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Sprinkle in black pepper. Add mushrooms and onions and saute until cooked through (approx. 3-5 minutes). 

  3. Slowly add in flour, constantly whisking to combine.

  4. Slowly begin to pour in drippings into the pan, constantly whisking. Allow the gravy to cook for several minutes, so that it can thicken up, whisk constantly to prevent from sticking to the pan.

  5. Serve immediately, or keep on very low heat until you’re ready to serve.
