With the holidays quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about your menu. One of my favorite side dishes I created last year was my Honey Glazed Apple & Sweet Potato Casserole.
I love mashed sweet potatoes around the holidays, and really love them loaded with brown sugar, butter, and marshmallows. This Honey-Sweetened Apple & Sweet Potato Mash is an excellent alternative that is a great way to curb your craving while still being a light dish!
With the addition of the Swanson Cream Starter™, these are just as creamy and delicious as you can imagine. They will fit in nicely with your holiday ham or turkey, stuffing, corn, and rolls.
Have I got your mouth watering yet? I can’t tell you what I’m most excited for around the table – but there’s a good chance you’ll find me head first in the bowl of Honey-Sweetend Apple & Sweet Potato Mash!
They are delicious, you’ve gotta try them!
Honey-Sweetened Apple & Sweet Potato Mash
Ingredients
- 3 lb. sweet potatoes peeled and cut into approx. 1" chunks
- 3 med. apples peeled & cut into approx. 1" chunks
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/3 c. Swanson Cream Starter™
- 1/4 c. honey
- 1/4 c. chopped pecans
Instructions
-
In a large pot, boil peeled sweet potatoes. Cook until potatoes are fork-tender, about 10 minutes.
-
Add apples, cinnamon and Swanson Cream Starter™. Return to stove top and heat 5 minutes until apples are warmed through; stirring to prevent potatoes from sticking. Remove from heat and add honey.
-
Using a hand mixer or immersion blender, mash apples and potatoes until smooth. Add vanilla and additional Swanson Cream Starter™ until desired consistency is reached.

I know it’s a year after the fact, but do you know of anything that could be used as a substitute for cream starter? I prefer natural to packaged. Thanks in advance.
Yvonne
Sure, you could just use full cream instead or sub with half and half or whole milk!
Love sweet potatoes and just bought some. I will have to look for this cream starter. This is the second time I’ve seen it used but have not noticed it in the stores here.
Yvonne
Awesome! Hopefully your stores sell it, it’s perfect in recipes!
I am loving this, especially the addition of apples and how the cream starter is way healthier than heavy cream. Mega yum!
Yvonne
Oh thank you so much Jen – that cream starter is gold!!

Thanks Mary! That’s exactly what I had in mind with the apples and it worked perfectly!
Oh yum. I love the marshmallows and pecans, but this looks like a fantastic option.

This looks so good! And a much healthier alternative to good ‘ol mash potatoes. I will have to go stock up on some of this cream starter so I can make this for Christmas… and New Years!
Yvonne
For sure! Don’t get me wrong, I love both!! I love the benefits of the healthier option more though! The cream starter is amazing and so verstile, you’ll love it!
