made this tonight. hate mushroom anything so tried using cream of onion soup instead of cream of mushroom (then i omitted the onion recipe calls for). turned out pretty good. could use some more tomato soup but will do that next time. reminds me of a dish my mom would make.

Cool, those are some pretty neat substitutions you made. Glad it worked out and you liked it. That’s the beauty of a lot of recipes, you can customize them to fit your taste!

Made this tonight, added some Frank’s hot sauce because I didn’t have chili powder. I got a thumbs up from everyone (except the extremely picky child, who actually didn’t complain about what was on her plate either- so I’ll take it). Will definitely make again. Thank you for the recipe, my husband told me I did a good job lol! Thank you for your blog, and keep up the good work!

You could definitely swap it out, I haven’t done it myself so I can’t tell you what the result will be – but I can’t imagine that it will make that much of a difference as far as the tomato soup vs. sauce. The elimination of the cream of mushroom may make more of a difference.

I used some leftover macaroni & cheese instead of the noodles. Thought it would be a good way to use my leftovers & it turned out great! Thanks for the recipes?

This turned out really well! Thank you for sharing the recipe. I used a half a jar of pasta sauce that was already open and in the fridge, instead of the tomato soup. I also added several nuggets of frozen chopped spinach while I was sauteeing the onion and ground beef. I like to add extra greens to casseroles when I can. Smoked paprika added a nice smoky richness to it. Will definitely be making this again!

I made this tonight and it was delicious. I added some sour cream and white cheddar before baking. It is definitely going on my short list for family dinners!

Miss Yvonne, This recipe is simply delicious, quick and easy just what I needed on a busy day like today mind you it’s the day before Thanksgiving and with all the prep I gotta do my 7yr old offered to help me make this casserole it was kid friendly as well :) when it was time to eat my boy closes his eyes and asked “is this real?” lol we loved it and I don’t even like hamburger meat! Thanx for sharing.

I made this tonight for supper, I didn’t have tomato soup, so I used a small can of spaghetti sauce, two cans of mushroom soup and cheese. The family raved over it and I did enjoy it myself. We will be making it again.

I made this tonight for the first time. I added some spice to this recipe to suit our spice loving palettes. Extra chili powder and red pepper flakes. We enjoyed this casserole so much . Thanks for the recipe.

I’m looking to make this for my boyfriend and our roomates as well but I’m worried it won’t be enough (we eat a lot). Did you double the recipe or leave it as is?

    1. Yvonne

The photos are not doubled and it was a pretty good size portion, it would make a ton if you doubled it (which may be good for your guys if you eat a lot!)

  10. Jennifer

I made this recipe tonight and it was great. I substituted the ground beef for ground turkey. Hit was a big hit. Thanks for the recipe. I’ll most definitely be making this again.

Thanks for an awesome recipe! My kids are 9, 7, 5, and 3 – and all but the 7 year old loved it. But he doesn’t like anything so no surprise there. ;) I don’t prefer to use cream of anything soups, so I replaced it with some sour cream. It was very creamy! Also didn’t have any corn on hand, so I’m looking forward to trying this again soon. This is a very versatile casserole, as I feel you could totally add whatever you like! Thanks again! :)

    1. Annie

I made this yummy dish tonight for dinner and I used cream of mushroom and cream of chicken (because I didn’t have tomato) it turned out great!

  13. Denise

This is the 3rd time I have made it I double the recipe because I cook for 5 people. My family loves it. My kids eat it. Especially hard to find food my twin 2yr olds will eat they like it. Thank you for sharing . great to throw the corn mixed in my 8 yr old is hard to get him to eat veggies.

When I was a little girl, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese put a recipe on their box called Wagon Wheel Dinner (I think: my siblings and I affectionately called it Slop;) it was one Mac n’ Cheese dinner cooked according to directions, ground beef, onion and a green pepper chopped, cooked and drained and added to the Mac n cheese, a small can of tomato paste, salt and pepper. Yours sounds like it is probably creamier. We loved it as kids, though.

      1. Jeanette Mundy

Due to putting 11/2 cooked noodles v.s. 11/2 dried noodles and then cooked, the recipe was still outstanding! My husband loved it! It would be helpful if the recipe was “corrected” for future users. Jeanette Mundy

Added jalapeños and bacon… It’s was great! Thanks for the quick and easy dinner idea! Oh, and used Gluten free noodles – all the same…

  16. Jenny

I don’t have any tomato sauce on hand… could I use spaghetti sauce or wait to try this recipe till I have tomato sauce?
    Thanks!

    1. Yvonne

I haven’t used Rotel much, so I’m not sure how much advice I have to offer – but I’d say if it’s something you like – give it a shot! Let me know how it turns out!

  17. JD Klesser

Family wrinkled their noses watching me mix the ingredients together. 40 minutes later, nothing but an empty dish. Will be making it again! Thank you!

  18. Joanne

This is very easy, affordable, and taste great. I did add cheese in the dish as well as on top. I have a family member that can not have tomato sauce and this does not bother them. One to keep!
