made this tonight. hate mushroom anything so tried using cream of onion soup instead of cream of mushroom (then i omitted the onion recipe calls for). turned out pretty good. could use some more tomato soup but will do that next time. reminds me of a dish my mom would make.
Yvonne
Cool, those are some pretty neat substitutions you made. Glad it worked out and you liked it. That’s the beauty of a lot of recipes, you can customize them to fit your taste!
Hannah
Do you have to add the corn?
Yvonne
Nope, if you don’t like corn you’re certainly welcome to leave it out.
John
Very good. Thank you. My wife and I commented on how this casserole reminded us of goulash.
Yvonne
Oh wonderful, happy you enjoyed it! I love me a good goulash, I can see how it’s similar.
Amber
Made this tonight, added some Frank’s hot sauce because I didn’t have chili powder. I got a thumbs up from everyone (except the extremely picky child, who actually didn’t complain about what was on her plate either- so I’ll take it). Will definitely make again. Thank you for the recipe, my husband told me I did a good job lol! Thank you for your blog, and keep up the good work!
Yvonne
Wow, thank you so much Amber – I really loved reading your comment!
Ashley
Could I by chance use two cans of tomato sauce instead of the tomato soup and cream of mushroom?
Yvonne
You could definitely swap it out, I haven’t done it myself so I can’t tell you what the result will be – but I can’t imagine that it will make that much of a difference as far as the tomato soup vs. sauce. The elimination of the cream of mushroom may make more of a difference.
That looks like MAJOR comfort food! It reminds me of my favourite church potluck dishes!!
Yvonne
Totally brilliant – this would be great at a church potluck!
I remember my grandmother making something similar to this and I LOVED it. Going to have to give it a whirl for some old memories. Thank you!
Yvonne
I love any memories where grandmother’s are involved. I miss mine all the time :)
iamahoneybee
I need a big bowl of this STAT!!!!
Yvonne
You’ll have to let me know if you give this a try!
Your photos are stunning! My mouth is watering!
Yvonne
Thank you so much! You’re the kindest!
All the cheese…this looks so delicious!
Yvonne
Thanks Christie!
What perfect comfort food!!!
Yvonne
Right? Totally comforting!
Chuck
I used some leftover macaroni & cheese instead of the noodles. Thought it would be a good way to use my leftovers & it turned out great! Thanks for the recipes?
I am getting ready to make this recipe of yours for my family of four- I am so excited to see how it turns out!
Claire
This turned out really well! Thank you for sharing the recipe. I used a half a jar of pasta sauce that was already open and in the fridge, instead of the tomato soup. I also added several nuggets of frozen chopped spinach while I was sauteeing the onion and ground beef. I like to add extra greens to casseroles when I can. Smoked paprika added a nice smoky richness to it. Will definitely be making this again!
Yvonne
Wowsers, your alterations sound AWESOME! I’m so happy you liked the recipe – I need to make your version next!
Savannah
Tomatoe soup or sauce..?
Yvonne
Soup
Shelly
Is it condensed soup?
Yvonne
Just regular tomato soup (I think Campbell’s is condensed, and that’s what I usually buy).
Lora
I made this tonight and it was delicious. I added some sour cream and white cheddar before baking. It is definitely going on my short list for family dinners!
Yvonne
White cheddar? That sounds AMAZING!!!
Carly
Did you make yours with regular tomato soup or cream of tomato soup?
Yvonne
Just regular.
Kia
Miss Yvonne, This recipe is simply delicious, quick and easy just what I needed on a busy day like today mind you it’s the day before Thanksgiving and with all the prep I gotta do my 7yr old offered to help me make this casserole it was kid friendly as well :) when it was time to eat my boy closes his eyes and asked “is this real?” lol we loved it and I don’t even like hamburger meat! Thanx for sharing.
Yvonne
Haha.. this is the best comment ever. Thank you so much!!
I made this tonight for supper, I didn’t have tomato soup, so I used a small can of spaghetti sauce, two cans of mushroom soup and cheese. The family raved over it and I did enjoy it myself. We will be making it again.
B
I have 4 kids so I had to double the recipe and I also added some sour cream before baking. My family loved it!
Mark
I made this tonight for the first time. I added some spice to this recipe to suit our spice loving palettes. Extra chili powder and red pepper flakes. We enjoyed this casserole so much . Thanks for the recipe.
Yvonne
Awesome, I’m so happy to hear that! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Lily
I’m looking to make this for my boyfriend and our roomates as well but I’m worried it won’t be enough (we eat a lot). Did you double the recipe or leave it as is?
Yvonne
The photos are not doubled and it was a pretty good size portion, it would make a ton if you doubled it (which may be good for your guys if you eat a lot!)
Melissa
can you double this and freeze ?
Jennifer
I made this recipe tonight and it was great. I substituted the ground beef for ground turkey. Hit was a big hit. Thanks for the recipe. I’ll most definitely be making this again.
Yvonne
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
linda steelet
VERY GOOD.
Catie
Thanks for an awesome recipe! My kids are 9, 7, 5, and 3 – and all but the 7 year old loved it. But he doesn’t like anything so no surprise there. ;) I don’t prefer to use cream of anything soups, so I replaced it with some sour cream. It was very creamy! Also didn’t have any corn on hand, so I’m looking forward to trying this again soon. This is a very versatile casserole, as I feel you could totally add whatever you like! Thanks again! :)

Do you drain the hamburger meat?
Yvonne
Yes, you’ll want to drain off any fat if you have any.

ThIs Recipe was really good. My youngest son had seconds… He never asks for more!!! We will definitely be cooking this again? thanks for sharing!!
Yvonne
That makes me so happy, glad you enjoyed it!
Jennifer
Do you drain the corn?
Yvonne
Great question, yes – you do.
Brandi F
We don’t like mushrooms. Is there anything else I could use?
Yvonne
Hmmm… maybe cream of chicken soup? I’m not sure. So sorry!
Annie
I made this yummy dish tonight for dinner and I used cream of mushroom and cream of chicken (because I didn’t have tomato) it turned out great!
Yvonne
Awesome, thank you for letting me know!
Denise
This is the 3rd time I have made it I double the recipe because I cook for 5 people. My family loves it. My kids eat it. Especially hard to find food my twin 2yr olds will eat they like it. Thank you for sharing . great to throw the corn mixed in my 8 yr old is hard to get him to eat veggies.
Yvonne
Wonderful! So happy your family loves it so much!
Erika
Just made this and kids and hubby are DEVOURING it!!! Thank you!
Yvonne

When I was a little girl, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese put a recipe on their box called Wagon Wheel Dinner (I think: my siblings and I affectionately called it Slop;) it was one Mac n’ Cheese dinner cooked according to directions, ground beef, onion and a green pepper chopped, cooked and drained and added to the Mac n cheese, a small can of tomato paste, salt and pepper. Yours sounds like it is probably creamier. We loved it as kids, though.
Yvonne
It’s super creamy and cheesy, let me know if you give it a try!
ZMan
Do you use 1 1/2 cup of cooked macaroni noodles or 1 1/2 cups of dry macaroni noodles that are then cooked.
Yvonne
1 1/2 c. dry macaroni, then cooked. Great question!
Jeanette Mundy
The measurement of 11/2 dried macaron needs to be corrected.
Jeanette Mundy
Due to putting 11/2 cooked noodles v.s. 11/2 dried noodles and then cooked, the recipe was still outstanding! My husband loved it! It would be helpful if the recipe was “corrected” for future users. Jeanette Mundy
Jamie
Added jalapeños and bacon… It’s was great! Thanks for the quick and easy dinner idea! Oh, and used Gluten free noodles – all the same…
Yvonne
That sounds wonderful! So happy you liked it!
Made this tonight for my family. I steamed the noodles in the pan with the meat and sauce instead of putting it in the oven and it still tasted great. Thanks for the idea.
Jenny
I don’t have any tomato sauce on hand… could I use spaghetti sauce or wait to try this recipe till I have tomato sauce?
Thanks!
marlene
This was very good and easy. Also added a can of mild rotel.
Thanks
Yvonne
Wonderful! I love the addition!
Stephanie
Trying it tonight
Yvonne
Enjoy!
Marcy
What about adding a can of drained rotel?
Yvonne
I haven’t used Rotel much, so I’m not sure how much advice I have to offer – but I’d say if it’s something you like – give it a shot! Let me know how it turns out!
Kat
This was great! I added a can of Rotel (not drained) and it added some zing. Fast and easy!
Yvonne
Oh yum, that sounds delicious!
JD Klesser
Family wrinkled their noses watching me mix the ingredients together. 40 minutes later, nothing but an empty dish. Will be making it again! Thank you!
Yvonne

Just made this for my boyfriend and roommates and it was a great success. So Effing delicious. Great recipe!
Yvonne
So glad you liked it!
Joanne
This is very easy, affordable, and taste great. I did add cheese in the dish as well as on top. I have a family member that can not have tomato sauce and this does not bother them. One to keep!
Yvonne
I’m so glad you liked it!
Did u use chilli powder? What if u don’t want to?
Yvonne
You’re certainly welcome to add it!
Look good, dear.
Fabulous! I didn’t have cream of mushroom so I did 2 tomato and added some canned mushrooms, this went fast and was so easy! I love your recipes thank you
Yvonne
Awesome – I’m so glad you like it Tami! Thanks for trying my recipes!!
