Steve and I have become known for the Indian food we make. Let me start over. Steve and I are known for our love of Indian food. More, Steve than myself, but I’m getting there. In fact, for our second date, Steve made homemade Indian food for me (Chicken Tikka Masala) and it was fantastic. Then, for my birthday a couple of months after we started dating, he took me to a local Indian restaurant for the first time. I immediately fell in love. It was fantastic. Since then, I can’t tell you how many times we’ve shared an Indian meal together. I even planned Steve’s surprise 30th birthday party a few years ago at a favorite Indian restaurant. Additionally, we’ve converted many friends to this delicious food – and now you can fall in love too!
In this Slow Cooker Indian Butter Chicken, the flavors blend so well together. With the help of your slow cooker, you can make this before work and come home to a pretty fantastic dinner. The only out of the ordinary spice you will want to get will be garam masala (which is an Indian spice staple), along with cumin, turmeric and curry powder. We keep all of those on hand. You’ll also want to pick up some basmati rice because that’s the traditional rice you’ll find in the restaurants. Although this is not considered a healthy meal, it’s definitely a delicious meal that we don’t mind splurging our calories on every once in a while. The recipe makes enough to feed a crowd, or have leftovers if it’s just for your small family. Believe me, you will want leftovers!

Recipe Notes
[My 2 Cents]
This goes great with naan. Never heard of naan? Here's what it is: Naan is a leavened, oven baked flatbread. It is one of the most popular varieties of South Asian Breads and is particularly popular in Afghanistan, Iran, India, and Pakistan.

Hi Yvonne, I’d like to make this for a crowd. Are you certain that it serves 24? 3lbs of chicken is only 4 chicken breasts…. it seems like it’s not enough. I’m worried!

Because of the high calorie count of this recipe, that serving size is for someone who is being calorie conscious – Fir example, when I’m calorie counting I will only allow myself 1/2 c. of the butter chicken and 1/2 c. basmati rice. For those that don’t count, portions are certainly much larger (1-2 cups generally). So if you are feeding a crowd I would definitely recommend doubling the batch! Hope that helps!

Does this really say 2 CUPS of butter??.
Yvonne
Yes ma’am it does! The recipe fills a 6 qt. slow cooker completely, serving size is 1 c. of Indian butter chicken, making 24 servings total. This certainly isn’t a healthy recipe by any stretch of the imagination – but it’s one we are willing to indulge every once in a while :) Also, if you aren’t feeing a crowd or don’t need lots of leftovers, you would be able to half the recipe no problem (making 1 c. butter). It’s SO good, but I can understand if you wouldn’t want to make it! Almost every time we go out to Indian, we will order this and Chicken Tikka Masala – YUM!!!

I’m Indian and I’ve never actually put butter in butter chicken but I’d love to make it in a crock pot. :) I’m 9 months pregnant so always looking for stuff that I can easily make and also freeze so we have something to eat a month later! Thank you so much Yvonne! I’m going to try it as soon as I can get some more organic butter! :)

I’m not Indian, but love the food. I also have only used 2 tsp of butter and that is to cook the onions in

This particular Indian recipe is a butter base, there are lots of different Indian chicken dishes – but this one is one of our favorites, and we order it often when we go to Indian (more commonly referred to as Murgh Makhani)!
